On a recent trip back to Panama, I picked up this beautiful heart shaped seed pod. (It belongs to the “Panama Tree”). It reminded me that hospitality, real, genuine hospitality, sits right at the heart of everything we do in this business.
Next week, I’m heading to London for the Short Term Accommodation Association (STAA) Summit. It’s one of the biggest short-term rental events in Europe. (Don’t have a ticket? Here’s the link to get one).
As I was looking through the exhibitor list, one thing really stood out.
Almost everything on offer is designed to automate your business.
Systems. Tools. AI. Platforms for every single task imaginable.
Which raises an important question:
In a world where everything is being automated… what actually matters most in hosting?
For me, the answer is simple.
Hospitality.
The One Thing You Can’t Automate
Hospitality is the human side of hosting, and it sits at the core of everything you do.
No system, no platform, and no piece of technology can replace genuine, down-to-earth hospitality.
The dictionary definition is simple:
Hospitality is the act of being friendly and welcoming to guests and visitors.
But in practice, it goes much deeper than that.
What Hospitality Really Means
Hospitality isn’t one big gesture.
It’s everything.
It’s the accumulation of small, thoughtful details that shape how your guests feel, and ultimately, how much they trust you.
And trust is what drives bookings.
For me, hospitality shows up in things like:
- Clear, timely communication with your guests
- A spotless, well-maintained property
- Helping guests feel at ease from the moment they book
- Clear, stress-free arrival instructions
- Comfort with quality furniture, comfortable beds, and good bedding
- Ambiance: a space that feels warm and thoughtfully put together
- Sharing local knowledge, not just listing it
- Making sure everything works exactly as it should
And then there are the small touches guests never forget:
- A well-curated Guest App
- A thoughtful welcome basket
- A handwritten note
- Tea, coffee, and milk for that first cuppa (as we say in England!)
- Cold water in the fridge
- Ice in the freezer
- Enough crockery and glassware for everyone
- Proper kitchen equipment for any budding chef
These things may seem simple, but they matter.
When guests are in an unfamiliar place, they notice everything.
And when it comes time to write a review, those details come back.
Why Independent Hosts like you have the Advantage
This is where independent hosts really come into their own.
You are in control of the entire experience – from the first message to the final review.
You can care.
You can notice.
And you can go the extra mile.
That’s something large property management companies struggle to replicate.
As businesses scale and become more automated, the human touch often gets diluted.
They’re managing too many properties to deliver the same level of attention to detail.
You’re not.
That’s your advantage. Own it.
Supporting Your Hospitality (Not Replacing It)
Using tools doesn’t mean losing the human touch.
Quite the opposite.
The right systems support your hospitality — they don’t replace it.
They save time, reduce stress, and help you run your business more efficiently and profitably.
In my book, 5-Star Hosting Made Simple, hospitality runs all the way through it.
I’ve highlighted the areas where guests are really judging their experience and the things that show up again and again in reviews.
And alongside the book, I’ve created a Business Toolkit to help you put this into practice.
It includes:
- Templates and checklists
- Pricing and cost calculators
- My custom HostGenius™ AI tools to support your marketing
These are designed to remove guesswork, give you confidence, and help you stay consistent.
To help you get started, I’ve also created the Ultimate STR Kitchen Equipment Checklist – based on what I provided in my own rental.

Final Thoughts
5-star hosting is not about perfection.
It’s about mindset, care and attention to detail.
And above all, it’s about hospitality.
Because when guests feel genuinely welcomed and looked after, everything else starts to fall into place.
Better reviews. Stronger trust. More bookings.
And that is something no system will ever replace.
That’s exactly what I set out to cover in 5-Star Hosting
It’s about building a business with hospitality at its heart. 💛
And looking again at that seed pod, it’s smooth and beautiful on the outside, but inside, it has fine prickles that are uncomfortable to the touch.
It’s a reminder that appearances aren’t everything.
As hosts, it’s not enough for our properties to look good.
They need to feel right.
Because hospitality isn’t about what guests see — it’s about what they experience.
And that experience should feel just as smooth, thoughtful, and welcoming on the inside as it does on the outside.
